Discover the Alessandrino district
The Alessandrino Quarter, Rome’s XXIII, is located between Viale Palmiro Togliatti and Via di Tor Tre Teste. Founded in 1961, the neighborhood owes its name to the ancient Alessandrino aqueduct, built in 226 AD by Emperor Alexander Severus to serve the Baths of Nero, now known as the Baths of Alexandria.
Originally a sparsely populated area until the early 20th century, ‘Alessandrino saw its first settlements with the construction of the General House of the Poor Daughters of Mary Most Holy Crowned. In the 1930s, the area saw the birth of “Quarticciolo,” an urban planning project between Via Prenestina and Viale Togliatti, which grew considerably after the 1943 bombings when it became a refuge for many evacuees.
During the German occupation in World War II, Quarticciolo emerged as a hub of the Roman Resistance, thanks in part to Giuseppe Albano, known as the “Hunchback of Quarticciolo.” With the new millennium, the neighborhood welcomed the Church of God the Merciful Father, designed by architect Richard Meier, and the large Giovanni Palatucci Park, a green area dedicated to the memory of the commissioner who saved thousands of Jews during the war.
